What Is NCTE? Role Of National Council For Teacher Education (NCTE)

Schools, educational institutions, and most important, teachers are integral parts of a student’s life. Teachers are mainly responsible for imparting knowledge on core subjects, inculcating educational values, and motivating students for further education and future endeavor. To provide a productive classroom session, the teachers should have certain methodologies and pedagogies.

Therefore, when a school appoints a teacher or instructor, verification of their educational background, capability to teach a particular subject and skills to handle students are pertinent. So, when a person wants to join the teaching profession, he should follow specific guidelines and procedures. This is where NCTE comes into play.

What Is NCTE?

NCTE stands for Nation Council for Teacher Education. It is a statutory body of the Indian government set up on the 1st of July 1995 that manages the enrichment of education of teachers and oversees standards, and procedures in the Indian education system. This autonomous body is purely constituted for designing the curriculum, the teacher education, and the maintenance of standards in the education system.

NCTE council is a provisional body of the Indian Government, which mainly focuses on the processes, procedures, and standards of teacher education in our country under the 1993 act. The primary objective of NCTE is to achieve the planned development of the teacher education system throughout the country. The mandate covers the whole spectrum of teacher education programs including research and training of teachers to teach at pre-primary, primary, secondary, and senior secondary stages in schools. The research and training are also applicable to the teachers of part-time education, non-formal education, adult education, and distance (correspondence) learning courses.

Roles and functions of NCTE

1. The NCTE council is soul responsible for planning and coordinating the development of teacher education. The Council also undertakes the following tasks:
2. Conduct surveys on various aspects of teacher education and publish them.
3. NCTE recommends to the state and central government, university grants and commissions, and recognized institutions to prepare suitable programs relating to teacher education.
4. NCTE deals with all prospects of technical education, and planning coordination, and implements a better system for teacher education.
5. Prepare necessary guidelines for minimum qualifications for a person to be qualified for a teacher position in institutions.
6. Prepare necessary guidelines about any specific category of courses or training in teacher education, minimum eligibility criteria for admission, and the method of selecting candidates, course contents, and curriculum.
7. Prepare mandatory guidelines for compliance by recognized institutions, from introducing new courses or training to providing instructional facilities and availability of equipment, staffing plans, and procedures.
8. Formulate standards for teacher education qualifications, admission criteria to such examinations, course schemes, and training.
9. Provide guidelines concerning tuition fees and other institutional fees chargeable by recognized institutions.
10. Conduct research and innovation in various areas of teaching education.
11. NCTE examines and analyzes the implementation of norms and guidelines periodically, and advises the recognized institutions accordingly.
12. NCTE council evaluates the performance appraisal system and mechanism to enforce accountability in recognized institutions.
13. Formulate various schemes for different levels of teacher’s education and build training institutions for teacher development programs.
14. Take necessary steps to prevent the commercialization of teacher education.
